Fine Arts Club Gives Students Two Evenings of Theatre

Westminster College students have the chance Nov. 19 and Nov. 21 to watch their friends on campus perform in an evening of three short comedic plays being presented by the Fine Arts Club at 8 p.m. in the Hermann Lounge on campus.

The three presentations are from a collection of one-act plays entitled “All in the Timing” by American playwright David Ives.  The plays focus on language and wordplay, existentialist perspectives on life and meaning and the complications involved in romantic relationships.

The first play, “English Made Simple,” directed by Emma Kliethermes, tells the story of a young man (Gordon Y. Allison) and woman (Freda Boateng) who meet at a party.  Their immediate romantic attraction is presented via loudspeaker (Emily Kesel) by a comically unromantic grammar lesson, while they struggle to free themselves from the banal constrictions of party talk.

Directed by Professor Nathanial C. Leonard, the second play “Words, Words, Words” deals with three chimpanzees (Carrie Antoine, Tiffany Crawford, and Lydia Colvin) that have been named after famous authors and are expected to type “Hamlet.”  They waste most of their time in pointless banter, occasionally inspired to make grand literary allusions.

The third play, “Sure Thing,” directed by Martin Roa, is the story of a couple (Tjizembua Tjikuzu and Ntombikayise Msubo)  who have an awkward first meeting in a café and continually reset each time they say the wrong thing until they finally romantically connect.

Production stage manager for the evenings of theatre is Isaac “Purcell” Coronel and the prop master is Darline Desil.
