Blue Jays Football Expands Coaching Staff in Anticipation of the 2024-2025 Season
Head Football Coach Luke Butts has named three individuals to the Blue Jays coaching staff, rounding out the football program at Westminster College: Kendall Roberts will serve as offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach, Alec Ramirez receives the title of defensive backs coach, and Thomas Kelly is the Blue Jays’ new offensive line coach.
“All three of these coaches are great fits here at WestMO. They all are outstanding ball coaches who are relationship-driven in their approach ― always putting the student-athlete first,” Butts said. “All three were highly recommended within the profession, and they wholeheartedly believe in the vision and culture we are establishing here at Westminster. I have no doubt that their passion towards coaching and cultivating relationships will be advantageous for our student-athletes and the campus community as a whole.”
Roberts comes to Westminster from Southeastern University in Lakeland Florida, while Ramirez and Kelly both most recently served at the University of Minnesota-Duluth during the 2022-2023 season.
Roberts worked from 2021 to the present at Southeastern University, where he most recently served as the pass game and recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach. In 2023, he coordinated the first kickoff-return touchdown in Southeastern’s history. Prior to his work with the Southeastern Fire, Roberts was an assistant wide receivers coach in 2021 at Bethel University in McKenzie, Tennessee. From 2017 to 2019, he worked in a number of capacities at Cincinnati Christian University in Ohio, including as a wide receivers coach.
Ramirez served as the defensive backs coach at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He is a 2021 graduate of the University of Texas-Austin, where he was an assistant coach during the 2020-2021 season. He then was a defensive graduate assistant at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia.
Kelly most recently served as a tight ends coach at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. He is a 2020 graduate of Lake Forest College in Lake Forest, Illinois, where he played for the Foresters while Coach Butts was an assistant coach. Prior to his position at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, Kelly earned his master’s degree in 2022 from the University of Jamestown in Jamestown, North Dakota. Kelly also served as the assistant strength coach and offensive graduate assistant for the Jamestown football team from 2020 to 2022.
Butts said that since he arrived at Westminster in January, he has been impressed with the work ethic of the Blue Jays and is excited about his new staff. He emphasized that he is emphasizing the concept of “#work” with his team, which is already paying off for the program.
“We’ve been able to create buy-in and alignment from the top down with our staff and players that is allowing us to get better each and every day. Our staff has already demonstrated a strong ability to recruit, to relate to the prospective student-athletes, and to share the new vision of Blue Jays football,” he said. “I am excited to see how our roster comes together over the next several months and am sincerely looking forward to the fans, alumni, and Fulton community showing up to the Kent and Judith Mueller Stadium this fall.”
