Hands-On Learning and Cutting-Edge Facilities for Westminster Biology Majors
For Westminster College biology majors, the classroom is much more than a place to study concepts and memorize terms. Students benefit from hands-on learning opportunities that merge theory and practice, both in state-of-the-art facilities on campus and through research in the field. Working together, these experiences provide a solid foundation for future careers in life sciences, health professions or allied health arenas.
“Westminster prepared me for the type of multidisciplinary work I do, challenged me to think outside the box and taught me how to deal with intense challenges on a daily basis,” says Dr. Jamie Spurrier Kondis ’02, instructor in pediatrics for Washington University School of Medicine and attending physician in child abuse pediatrics at St. Louis Children’s Hospital.
Home to the state-of-the-art Coulter Science Center, Westminster offers biology majors the chance to:
- Develop their skills in cutting-edge facilities
- Learn in the College’s on-campus anatomy lab
- Use innovative ideas, existing and coordinated research to improve human health, food supply and the environment
- Grow in their experience and diversity through lab and fieldwork, group and independent projects and exciting off-campus activities (such as summer research trips to Belize, Kenya, Peru and Ecuador)
Westminster biology grads are working and interning at leading facilities across the country, including: Washington University School of Medicine, St. Louis Children’s Hospital, SIUE School of Pharmacy, University of Missouri, BerkleyMed, UMKC School of Pharmacy, Vanderbilt University Medical Center, St. Louis Zoo, Sigma Aldrich, Missouri Department of Natural Resources, Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and more.
