Baseball Goes 2-3 In Series With MacMurray
The Westminster Blue Jays fell to the MacMurray Highlanders in game one of the three game series 7-2 Friday afternoon. The Blue Jays were held to only four hits, two of which came off the bat of Andy Pichler.
Will Miller was the losing pitcher, pitching 7 innings allowing 4 earned runs while striking out 6.
In game two, the Blue Jay bats caught fire scoring 12 runs on 11 hits in seven innings defeating the Highlanders 12-4.
Westminster was down 1-0 entering the third inning when Andy Pichler hit a one out single followed by consecutive singles by Tim Chambliss, Deion Hughes, and Tyler Branneky. Loethan ended the four run third with a RBI double plating Branneky. This was then followed by a two run fourth and a two run fifth.
Tyler Picha lead off the fourth with a single and later stole second. After back-to-back walks to Pichler and Chambliss, De. Hughes singled scoring Picha and Pichler.
Backes added two RBIs in the fifth when he singled in Danton Hughes, who doubled earlier in the inning, and Picha, who walked, to make it 8-2. The Highlanders added two runs in the bottom of the fifth to make it 8-4 after five innings.
The bats were silenced in the sixth but woke up again in the seventh for four more runs including an RBI by Backes and two more by De. Hughes.
Eight Blue Jays had hits including two by Cam Backes who added three RBIs and three by Deion Hughes who had six RBIs. De. Hughes got his seventh win of the year tying the school record for most wins in a season pitching five innings allowing four earned runs, striking out 9. Ryan Strohm pitched two innings of scoreless relief.
The bats stayed alive in the rubber game of the series as the Blue Jays plated 13 on 15 hits beating the Highlanders 13-7.
The Blue Jays were down 3-0 heading into the top of the second. After a leadoff single by Da. Hughes, Loethen singled scoring Da. Hughes from first base. After loading the bases on walks to Backes and Pichler, Chambliss singled in two runs tying the game as three.
Westminster took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning on a Chambliss sacrifice fly scoring Backes, who singled earlier in the inning. They plated another in the fifth inning on a RBI single by Picha.
The Highlanders scored in the bottom of the fifth to make it 5-4. The Blue Jays answered back with two more runs in the sixth on a RBI double by Ty. Branneky and a RBI single by Da. Hughes.
The Highlanders answered with a two run homerun in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 7-6 game. In the top of the seventh, the Blue Jays rallied scoring three runs on RBIs by Chambliss, De. Hughes, and Ty. Branneky. The Blue Jays added another in the eighth and two more in the ninth to pull lead to 13-6. The Highlanders added a run in the bottom of the ninth making it 13-7.
Five Blue Jays had multiple hits including two each by Ty. Branneky, Tanner Branneky, and Cam Backes. Da. Hughes and Loethen both had three hits.
Jake Lund was the winning pitcher. He pitched six innings allowing three earned runs on six hits while striking out six.
The Blue Jays are back in action Wednesday against #2 Webster University at Webster.
