Baseball Drops Two To Fontbonne
The Westminster baseball team dropped two to Fontbonne University on Wednesday. The Westminster Blue Jays dropped game one 5-3 and was shutout in game two, 8-0. They are now 5-6 in conference play and 11-8 overall.
Fontbonne hit a two run homerun in the top of the second in game one to take a 2-0 lead, but Westminster’s junior Tyler Branneky led-off in the bottom of the second with his third homerun of the season to bring the score to 2-1.
Fontbonne added three more runs in the third inning.
Junior Tim Chambliss led-off the fourth inning with a bunt. Sophomore Deion Hughes was then hit by a pitch, advancing Chambliss to second. Ty. Branneky grounded out to third base, advancing the bases. Senior Danton Hughes then grounded out to shortstop, moving De. Hughes to third and scoring Chambliss. De. Hughes then scored off a wild pitch, bringing the Blue Jays within two runs, 5-3. Freshman Mike Washington and senior Andy Pichler both singled, and freshman Tanner Branneky was hit by a pitch to make bases loaded with two outs. The Blue Jays hit a fly out to right field, ending the inning.
The Blue Jays held Fontbonne from scoring again, but could not score themselves.
Sophomore Collin Brinker (1-3) was credited with the 5-3 loss. He pitched three innings and struck out three. Washington and Pichler each went 2-3 from the plate. Chambliss finished with seven putouts. Ta. Branneky had five putouts and three assists.
Game two was scoreless until Fontbonne put up five runs in the fifth inning. They added three more in the top of the ninth and held the Blue Jays from scoring, shutting the Blue Jays out 8-0.
The Blue Jays were held to just four hits during the loss. Freshman Jake Lund (2-2) was credited with the loss after pitching the first 4.1 innings. Chambliss had nine putouts and Ty. Branneky had five assists.
The Blue Jays host Principia College at the Saucier Field for a three-game series starting Friday, April 11. A nine-inning single game will be played at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
