Women’s Basketball 0-2 After Tip Off Classic

The women’s basketball team hosted the Henry P. Iba Tip Off Classic on Friday and Saturday, November 15-16, to open their season. The Westminster Blue Jays fell to Elmhurst on Friday night, 52-76. On Saturday, they faced Millikin University and lost 54-70.

“Elmhurst and Millikin are great competition for us. They both have solid programs,” said Head Coach Tracey Braden. “This team is young; we will continue to work and get better.”

Sophomore Kasey Gatson led the Blue Jays with 14 points and three assists in the game against Elmhurst. The Blue Jays were held to just 28.6 percent from the field and two three-pointers throughout the game.

Millikin took the 15 point lead in the first half of the game Saturday, but the Blue Jays were able to cut it to 11 points heading into halftime, 18-29. The Blue Jays cut the deficit to 22-29 just 1:30 into the second half, but Millikin held their ground and pulled out the win.

“We did a better job competing against Millikin,” commented Coach Braden. “We were able to hit some shots and that always helps.”

The Blue Jays shot 35.1 percent from the field and 40.7 percent from the 3-point arc. Sophomore Sadie Theroff went 5-11 from the 3-point line and finished the game with 16 points.

“We made a lot of improvements in just one game,” commented Theroff. “We are all excited to get back in the gym and keep working and preparing for the rest of the season.”

The Blue Jays travel to Tulsa, Oklahoma next weekend to face Southwestern (Texas) on November 23 at 4:00 p.m.
