Five Field Records Broken At William Jewell Darrel Gourley Open

Five field records were broken by the Westminster men’s and women’s track and field team at the William Jewell Darrel Gourley Open on Saturday, April 12. The women’s team placed 10th out of 16 teams. The men’s team placed 13th. The schools competing were comprised of four Division II teams, five NAIA teams and six Junior College teams.

Junior Amanda Killgore broke the long jump and triple jump records. She placed 4th in the triple jump with a 9.49-meter jump and 9th in the long jump with a 4.64-meter jump.

Sophomore Bret Robertson broke the javelin throw record with a 45.70-meter throw and a 6th place finish. Junior Mike Lutz broke the shot put record with a 11.02-meter throw (20th place), and sophomore Christian Houston broke the hammer throw record with a 29.41-meter throw (21st place).

Robertson ran the 400-meter hurdles and placed 12th with a 1:04.38 time. 

On top of his record setting throw in shot put, Lutz also partook in the discus and hammer throw. He placed 23rd in the discus (29.40m) and hammer throw (26.44m).

Houston also threw discus and shotput. He placed 25th in shot put (9.86m) and 27th in discus (24.94m).

Also on the field for the men’s team was senior Gus Lyles and junior Dan Breihan. Lyles threw javelin (11th /38.50m), shot put (24th /10.33m) and discus (28th /22.47m). Breihan placed 6th in the high jump (1.65m), 7th in the triple jump (11.70m) and 9th in the long jump (5.68m).

Also on the field for the women’s team was sophomore Jen Herndon and junior Danielle Smulczenski. Herndon placed 10th in shot put with a 10.11-meter throw and 13th place in the javelin throw (26.72m). Smulczenski placed 18th in the discus with a 21.4-meter throw, followed by Herndon with a 19th place finish (21.18m).

The men’s team participated in only one event on the track. Senior Matt Borst finished 4th in the 5000-meter run with a 16.08.73 time. Junior Daniel Lindaman placed 12th with a 17:27.83 time and senior Jake Burch placed 21st (19:35.14).

The women’s team ran in six events on the track.

Junior Tanisha Terrell placed 4th in the 100-meter dash, finishing in 12.86 seconds, and 8th in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 27.59 seconds.

Senior Sarah Ogar placed 5th (2:37.15) and freshman Rachel Bade placed 12th (2:40.49) in the 800-meter run, and sophomore Brier Skogsberg placed 11th (21:37.12) in the 5000-meter run.

Killgore, junior Nyima Njie, Ogar and Terrell ran the 4×100-meter relay and placed 4th with a total time of 52.22 seconds.

Bade, Killgore, Njie and Smulczenski placed 4th in the 4×400-meter relay with a time of 4:16.52.

The Blue Jays will compete in the Mule Relays on Friday, April 18 in Warrensburg, Missouri to round out their regular season before the conference invitational.
