Westminster Falls to #5 Washington University

The Westminster volleyball team was swept by the 5th ranked team in Division III, Washington University-St. Louis, in the first day of the Bears Invite, 3-0. The loss puts the Westminster Blue Jays at 16-11 on the season.

The scores were 25-14, 25-13 and 25-20.

The Washington University Bears took a 10-5 lead in set one, but the Blue Jays scored four unanswered points to bring the score to 12-9. The Bears went on four short runs to bring the set to 24-13, but a kill by sophomore Gabby LaRose put the score to 24-14. The Bears put down a kill to end set one, 25-14.

The Bears started out with the lead in set two, but a kill by LaRose followed by two service aces by LaRose tied the set at 5-5. After a kill by sophomore Riley Lawrence put the Blue Jays up 10-8, the Bears called a timeout. A five point run by Washington University forced the Blue Jays to call a timeout. The Bears came out of the timeout and scored again, taking the 16-12 lead. The Bears struck a 9-0 run to end set two, 25-13.

Kills by Lawrence, sophomore Amanda Kiso and LaRose gave the Blue Jays a 6-4 lead. The Bears tied the set up at 11-11, but the Blue Jays scored four unanswered points to take the 15-12 lead. The Bears tied  the set up at 17-17 and took the lead. The Bears went on an 8-3 run to end the set and match, 25-20.

Lawrence and freshman Hannah Marshall led the Blue Jays with 5 kills each. Sophomore setter Kayla Reeg had 17 assists and led the team with 13 digs. Kiso had two block solos and one block assist.

The Blue Jays will face Transylvania and Millikin on Saturday, November 1, at 10:00 a.m. and 12:15 p.m., respectively. The tournament page has the links to live stats and live video.
