Lady Blue Jays Trump Fontbonne, 86-78

The Westminster Lady Blue Jays trumped the Fontbonne Griffins, 86-78, Saturday afternoon. They are now 10-10 overall and 8-6 in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play.

The game was back-and-forth until sophomore Mackenzie Haddox hit two jumpers to take the 27-24 lead with 7:28 left in the first half. A drained three-pointer by senior Leigh Ann Lutz and three free throws made by Haddox gave the Blue Jays the 33-25 lead. In the final minute of the half, the Blue Jays put down two free throws and a three-pointer to send them into halftime up 45-35.

To start the second half, the Griffins brought the game within five points, but the Blue Jays scored six unanswered points to pull the 56-43 lead. After chipping away at the lead, Fontbonne brought the game within two points with 9:10 on the clock and tied the game up at 72-72 with 5:41 left in the game.  The Griffins took the lead, but two good free throws by sophomore Jen Herndon seconds later tied the game back up.

Two free throws by Haddox and a good three-pointer by freshman Andrea Zalis brought the lead to 79-74 with three minutes remaining. In the final minute, the Griffins resorted to fouling to stop the clock. The Blue Jays went 4-for-6 from the foul line to take the 86-78 win.

The Blue Jays shot 45.3 percent from the field and 45.4 percent from the three-point line. Lutz and Haddox led the game with 24 points apiece. Haddox went 7-for-8 from the foul line and ended the game with six assists and seven rebounds. Zalis added 17 points to the win.

The Blue Jays host Iowa Wesleyan College on Wednesday, February 12, at 6:00 p.m.
