Drew Cook Scores Both In Men’s Soccer 2-1 Overtime Win

Freshman midfielder Drew Cook scored both goals in the Westminster men’s soccer 2-1 overtime win Tuesday evening. The Blue Jays were up against conference foe Fontbonne University. Both teams were undefeated in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play heading into tonight’s game. The Blue Jays are now 4-0 in the SLIAC and 5-7-1 overall.

“The boys showed great heart and determination to pull through a tough battle against a good team that came to play,” said Head Coach Andrew Bordelon.

Junior Connor Hollrah took a shot within six yards of the goal 21 minutes into the game. The ball was deflected by Fontbonne’s goalkeeper and Drew Cook was able to easily tap the ball into the net to give the Blue Jays the 1-0 lead.

In the 32nd minute, the Griffins of Fontbonne scored to tie up the game, 1-1.

After a scoreless second half, the game headed into overtime.

The Blue Jays took four shots on goal before Drew Cook had a breakaway that resulted in a goal with just 47 seconds left in the overtime to win the game.

The Blue Jays took 13 shots on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Raul Belman Romero recorded four saves in the overtime win.

“Both teams had good chances but we came out flying in extra time and fully deserved the goal,” commented Coach Bordelon. “It was a complete team win and every player showed a lot of heart.”

The Blue Jays will host Spalding University this Saturday, October 19, at 5:00 p.m for their Homecoming Weekend.
