Alumni Invited to Westminster Research Trip to the Galapagos Islands
Westminster alumni are invited to join a summer research trip to the Galapagos Islands January 4-14, 2019, which is being jointly sponsored by Westminster and Baker University.
The 11-day program will include visits to landmarks such as Tortuga Bay, Black Turtle Cove, and Sante Fe Island, plus the opportunity to explore two biodiverse reserves on Ecuador’s mainland.
Accompanied by an expert naturalist guide, those on the trip will discover firsthand the fascinating biodiversity, volcanic terrain, and geological history that make these islands so compelling.
Program highlights include:
- A closeup look at Galapagos tortoises, marine iguanas, and blue-footed boobies;
- Stargazing aboard Tip Top IV during a four-night cruise;
- Hiking, swimming, and snorkeling on explorations of the Islands;
- A visit to Antisana Ecological Reserve, a nature sanctuary home to hundreds of species of birds, plants, and other animals; and
- Participation in a reforestation project in Galapagos National Park.
The travel itinerary is active and may be strenuous with hiking in volcanic terrains and snorkeling in cold water.
The service-learning project will require long hours of work in the sunshine, and the rooms on the islands during the project are dormitories.
The trip is limited to 14 people, and the deadline to apply is May 31, 2018.
