A Young Alumna Finds Success through Service to our Country
How does the Westminster experience help lead to success for alumni? Strong communication skills and a focus on career path pay off. Read this post from United States Navy Gunner’s Mate Second Class Alumna Cassandra Bourquin (’10):
While at Westminster, I came to know Meg Langland with the Center for Career Development (now the Center for Career Services) toward the end of my freshman year because I had no idea what I wanted to do as a career.
My first experience with the Center was conducting an assessment to evaluate my values, interests, and personality type to help brainstorm suitable majors and career paths. This led me to developing more of a focus on my stories and ultimately obtaining a degree in Business Communication.
One of the best organizations I became a part of during my time with the Center for Career Development is Toastmasters. Toastmasters gave me extra confidence in my public speaking and interpersonal skills.
In August 2013, I was selected to do a television interview promoting my ship because our Public Affairs Officer thought I was a great speaker. He didn’t even know I had a background in public speaking – just thought I was a natural. I’m beginning to work with him on other public affairs opportunities for the ship too.
