“The significance of this event, it is a unique opportunity that not many Saharawi students get to have,” said Ahmed. “I was born and raised and continue to live in refugee camp south Algeria. My parents, along with 200,000 refugees, still live in harsh conditions waiting for the UN to come up with a solution. It is therefore my duty to deliver the message [to the] United Nations [that we] must find a solution for my people and stop the Moroccan human rights violations in occupied territory of Western Sahara.”

“Mulay’s speech last week before the United Nations General Assembly’s Special Political and Decolonization Committee in New York is an important event for a Westminster student,” said Kurt Jefferson, Assistant Dean for Global Initiatives and Director of the Churchill Institute for Global Engagement.  “In demonstrating global leadership, he was able to talk to the Moroccan, American, and European delegates, at the highest level of diplomacy, about the plight and self-determination of his nation, the Sahwaris, in Western Sahara. That is exciting.”
