How to start your first year of college off right

Nervous about starting college? Below, Westminster College resident advisors share their advice for what do on the first day.

“Starting day one, meet as many people as possible. Just go around and say hi to everyone.” —Ashley Sarah Reisig, Class of 2016 (Ferguson, Missouri)

“My advice for day one of college life would be, don’t be nervous, and enjoy the experience.” —Jordan Lauchland (Galt, California)

“Get to know your roommate early on. Get to know the things you have in common and the little things you will have to do to get along. It can save you from major problems down the road.” —Allison Wright, Class of 2017 (Independence, Missouri)

“First impressions mean a lot! Make sure yours is one that makes your new college family smile and feel good about the first time that they meet you!” —Tayisah Mykelle, Class of 2016 (St. Louis, Missouri)

“Dress not to impress, but to get hot and sweaty. Unless you are having someone else to do it, moving in the middle of August is not walking in the park. Wear something that’s comfy and cool so you can carry and move anything. Once you’re moved in and your room is arranged how you want, shower and change. Also, be flexible on room arrangement. There are a million and a half ways to arrange your stuff, find the one you and your roommate like best.” —Grant Gershner, Class of 2016 (Springdale, Arkansas)

“Say hello and introduce yourself! I spent a lot of welcome week introducing myself to everyone who walked by, even when it was awkward. I have made and continue to make quite a few friends this way. Also, take advantage of the welcome week activities – there are not random weeks dedicated solely to making new friends throughout the rest of your glorious college experience.” —Laura Wiltshire, Class of 2016 (Lee’s Summit, Missouri)

“For your first few days you might be a little nervous and overwhelmed, but don’t be! Just remember this is your time to have a fresh start. If you didn’t like something in the past, you now have a clean slate and you can try something else. Be true to yourself and be who you want to be. Also try to get involved as much as you can! Try to stay positive and friendly to make your college career fun, successful, and memorable!” —Amanda Kiso, Class of 2017 (Jefferson City, Missouri)

“Meet as many people you live with as you can, since you will see them more than anyone for the first few weeks. Make friends in the quad too, because your suite will get boring at some point and it will be nice to go somewhere else.” —Mathew Nienhuis (Versailles, Missouri)
