What Admissions Counselor Marina Turner Tells Shy Prospective Students

Westminster College boasts six admissions counselors who provide a listening ear and one-on-one attention with all types of students, from the uncertain, small-town high school senior to the leadership-seeking, confident transfer who feels lost at a huge university.

Throughout the summer, the College will introduce you to each of our devoted counselors. This week, we introduce Marina Turner, who grew up in Boonville, MO. Turner brings to Westminster an understanding of how shy students can blossom in Westminster’s small, attentive environment and transition into confident leaders.

Please tell about your educational background.

I actually graduated in 2019 from a small, private liberal arts college that was very similar to Westminster. I majored in Human Services. Westminster actually has a much stronger network within the town of Fulton and with its alumni.

What is your admissions territory?

Mid-Missouri and northeast Missouri.

What do prospective students ask you the most about Westminster College?

Student generally ask me about the student-and-faculty relationships here.

What is something interesting about yourself that you bring to your position in Enrollment Services?

I was a very shy student in high school, and when I meet with prospective students, I am reminded of my experience back then. I didn’t want to remain shy, so when I went to a small college, I was able to do all sorts of things I might not have tried at a large university. I tell them that Westminster provides an environment where they can do anything and everything they ever wanted to do.

What do you like most about Westminster College?

I really like how the students have the ability to not just be a number. When a student starts with Westminster, they become a part of the Blue Jay family with endless support from faculty, staff, and coaches.

What one piece of advice would you give to prospective students concerning Westminster?

No matter what you want to accomplish, you have a place at Westminster College. All you have to do is take advantage of the opportunities that come to you.

What are your hobbies and interests?

I love to spend time with my family — my husband and I are celebrating our one-year anniversary this month — and my dog, Kase. I also love being out on the water and soaking up the sun.
