Road Trip to Happiness: How a Journey to a Large University Made John Martin a Blue Jay

Westminster College boasts six admissions counselors who provide a listening ear and one-on-one attention with all types of students — from the uncertain, small-town high school senior to the leadership-seeking, confident transfer who feels lost at a huge university.

Throughout the summer, the College will introduce you to each of our devoted counselors. This week, we introduce John Martin III, ’19 ΣΑΕ, who fell in love with Westminster while traveling from his home in Texas to visit a larger college in Kansas.

Where are you from originally?

I’m from Houston, TX.

What was your major here?

I majored in Business Communication.

What is your Admissions territory?

Primarily southwestern Missouri. I also cover all other “non-travel states,” which are states where we don’t have an admissions rep. Right now we have reps who live in St. Louis, Illinois and the Southwest.

What are your hobbies and interests?

I played football here at Westminster, so of course I like sports (especially Blue Jays football). I also like animals and enjoy riding motorcycles, playing video games and just hanging out with my cat.

What do you most want to tell prospective students about Westminster College?

Westminster is what you make of it. It is a place where opportunities are many, and it allows you to discover yourself.

What’s your absolute favorite aspect of Westminster College?

I love the people: my classmates, my professors, my fraternity brothers. They are like family to me. When I came here on my way to visit a Division II school in Kansas, I fell in love with the place. I felt like I could be myself here … not just a recruit. Not just a football player. I could be me.
